Morrissey was due to play SMU’s McFarlin Auditorium on Wednesday night, although that seems to be up in the air after his keyboardist was hospitalized in Colorado on Monday. (Update: The show was, sadly, cancelled due to illness. Refunds at point of purchase.) (Update 2: The show has since been rescheduled for Dec. 14.)
We’ll update here accordingly, and then lock the door to our room to play The Queen Is Dead and write frighteningly distraught verse in our diary, if the show is canceled.
Regardless, we’ll continue with our ritual preparations for a Morrissey concert. We’ve been sticking to a vegan diet, reading Oscar Wilde, moping beautifully, and listening to The Smiths—special thanks to The Ticket, America’s favorite sports radio station and go-to source for all things Moz, for playing a Morrissey preview show Monday night.
As is tradition whenever Morrissey visits North Texas, it’s also time to re-watch Live in Dallas, a film of the singer’s 1991 performance at the venue then known as the Starplex Amphitheater. The quality isn’t spectacular, but the entire performance is floating around on YouTube and is worth watching.
The video is notable for a couple extra reasons. No. 1 is this classic VHS cover:
No. 2 is that during the encore, “Everyday Is Like Sunday,” several emotional fans mobbed Morrissey and forced the singer into a backstage retreat while his guitarist took over vocals. It’s a charming document of teenage enthusiasm, and of the particular cult devotion Morrissey inspires. It should also help illustrate how very, very sad we’ll all be if this show at McFarlin Auditorium is cancelled.
