Queen of the South Episode 9 Recap

International drug trafficking is a tough business.

The world Teresa lives in has become a nightmare. Last week, she shot John, the Matthew McConaughey wannabe from the Florida gang, and now she can’t stop thinking about it. If tensions weren’t high enough before, they are through the roof now.

Camila finds Teresa and brushes her hair out of her face. She tells her that John would have killed her without shedding a tear and to pull herself together. Teresa knows that, but has another flashback of him falling to the ground.

Soon, a man named Leon calls James to inform him that his “brothers got smoked,” talking about John and the Florida crew. James is pretending he just woke up and doesn’t know anything about it. This is a pretty big lie on James’ part. They hang up, and James knows he has to go find Maria, the hotel maid, because she is a witness.

Future Teresa is looming in the background softly nodding her head after James tells Teresa he knows how she feels. Present Day Teresa knows what she needs to do. The music builds as she grabs a tool off her chair, runs outside, and drives away from the warehouse. She is going to Maria to take her to Mexico, away from this life. Later, she disables the tracker on her phone and abandons her car so James can’t find them.

In the next scene, two men, one with face tattoos that put Mike Tyson’s to shame, are putting money away in a vault. All of a sudden, Camila arrives to seal the deal with her personal delivery. Her client, Alan, takes a hit of the cocaine. How do high businessmen finalize huge deals? It’s only a knife’s-tip amount, but still. I guess I wouldn’t know. I can’t afford that lifestyle.

Eric, the guy with the birds and the huge parties, walks in with a deal of his own and doesn’t understand why Alan trusts someone who couldn’t guarantee deliveries before. Alan looks at him and says, “She just delivered.” Camila smiles and says, “You got your answer. Go back to North Texas.” Yeah, go back to North Texas, Eric! This is Camila’s turf. Later we see her deliver the $5 million she owed for the lost shipments and regain her independence from Epifanio in the business.

James and Leon meet up at what looks like an abandoned barbecue restaurant (must have shut down after it wasn’t recognized by D Magazine’s best barbecue list. Tragic). There’s the usual shot of the Reunion Tower. The way the camera is angled, it’s pretty obvious the director was intent on having the buildings there. Leon knows “there was a maid” involved. This guy is getting warmer, and James is getting closer to sharing the same fate as John’s.

Afterwards, James drives to Maria’s. There are so many colorful words to be said here but I will leave those to your imagination. James has a bad boy charm that makes ladies swoon, but right now that charm is absent. He demands to see the cameras at the apartment, holding a gun to the maintenance man’s head. James knows Teresa is involved.

Leon meets with Camila, who reminds him who she is. He just wants answers, but his mustache needs to go. How can he be taken seriously when he is channeling Jeff Foxworthy?

When we think she is going to tell him to leave, she tells him the man he wants is Eric. She writes down his information and says, “Took a lot of work to find that out, but nothing happens here without me eventually knowing about it. So do it quickly, and then, get out of my city.” Damn. I want to be like Camila when I grow up.

The next scene shows Leon unsuccessfully hunting Eric in a surface lot off San Jacinto downtown near the AT&T Performing Arts Center. By the end of the episode, Eric makes an appearance at Camila’s club pouring out a container of teeth (ew). He picks one out of the pile and says, “It wasn’t until this one that he let me know it was you who sent him.” Camila crosses her arms—she is uncomfortable because now things are returning to the red zone. I hope she showers later because that’s all Eric makes me want to do.

Soon, Maria and Angel are going into the Texas-Mexico border, where they will get to the other side in 30 minutes.

Teresa might not want to be responsible for their fate with James, but she is responsible for an unforgiveable change in their lives. Brenda tells her that it’s okay and she did what she could before Teresa decides to go with them. She crawls into the dusty space and begins the next journey. We’ll have to wait until Thursday to see where she ends up.

We only have a few more episodes to go before the season ends. Hang in there. Episode No. 10 airs 9 pm this Thursday on USA.
