The Funniest People in Dallas This July

The best comedy events in town this month.

June gave you some comedy greats in the heart of Dallas, and now July wants in on the action. If you are seeking even more funny faces in North Texas, you’re in luck.

Oh, and Sarah Silverman’s going to be at WinStar World Casino on July 2, but I think you and I both may have somewhere else to be instead of a venue in Oklahoma filled with lost dreams, overpriced beer, and Vanellope von Schweetz. Like, anywhere else. Read on.

You’ve seen him portray one of the many Colonel Sanders, try to sell you a Chrysler because he’s a family man who is all about safety, and star in a show that mirrors his life. Now you can see him in person. Jim Gaffigan, a clean comedian who doesn’t need to be crude to be funny, will be at Gexa Energy Pavilion on July 7 to talk food, family, and funny aspects of faith.

Chris Tucker, most known for his roles in films like Rush Hour and Friday, is on tour for his 2015 Netflix special “Chris Tucker Live!” Along with his successful Hollywood career, Tucker has climbed the stand-up comedy food chain. He will be at the Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie on July 26.

Founded by comedians Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, Matt Walsh, and Parks and Recreation and Saturday Night Live alum Amy Poehler, Upright Citizens Brigade is a powerhouse of sketch and improv comedy. The UCB Touring Company is coming to Dallas, and the audience is in for a treat because this show has never been seen before — and because of the improvised nature of the performance, will never be seen again. The UCB TourCo will perform an entirely unscripted and unforgettable show July 30 at the Dallas City Performance Hall.

The inaugural Denton Comedy Festival is hitting the Old Dirty Basement of J&J’s Pizza, with a lineup of local stand-ups including Paul Varghese and Bob Biggerstaff. The two-day festival will start July 29, and ticket and day pass information can be found on this freshly minted website.

Unintentional comedian Drew Lynch had dreams of becoming an actor before a softball accident left him with a stutter. He decided to go on America’s Got Talent to try his hand at stand-up comedy instead, winning the “Golden Buzzer.” Lynch will perform July 6 at the Addison Improv.

He might act tough, but he’s got a lot of feelings. Craig Robinson, star of Pineapple ExpressThis Is The End, and The Office,  will be at the Improv for several nights. Before finding a career in comedy and acting, Robinson was a K-8 teacher by day and musician with his band, Craig Robinson & the Nasty Delicious, by night. Robinson will perform two shows a night July 8 and 9, with one final performance July 10.

With her namesake Netflix special Ali Wong: Baby Cobra, Wong became the first comedian to record a full stand-up special while seven months pregnant. She has made appearances on The Tonight Show and Late Night with Seth Meyers, and has been a frequent guest on Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer and @Midnight. Wong will perform two shows a night at the Improv July 22 and 23.

“Oh man, those are some big names! Wow. Do you think I could be like them one day, Julia?” You can set yourself up for comedy greatness, dear reader, and I’m here to help. The Dallas Comedy House in Deep Ellum hosts a free improv comedy jam session and an open mic night at 8 pm every Tuesday. If you aren’t ready to perform and want to learn the basics, come back on the last Wednesday of the month for a free improv class from 7 to 8 pm.

And if you haven’t been to one of these shindigs before, here’s some information about what you’re getting yourself into.
