The Four Art Gallery Openings You Need to See This Weekend

It's a relatively sleepy art weekend in Dallas, which offers an excuse to head west to The Old Jail Art Center. Plus, openings at Talley Dunn, Art Con, and more.

NEXT TOPIC: Nuclear War and Environmental Catastrophy by Laray Polk at CentralTrak — June 5, 7 p.m. 800 Exposition Ave. Dallas, TX 75226.

As Tim mention on FrontBurner, Laray Polk will be discussing her latest book, a collaboration with Noam Chomsky entitled Nuclear War and Environmental Catastrophe, at CentralTrak. Polk’s talk will focus on the book’s Texas ties, including the so-called West Texas “Nuclear Alley,” a dumping ground for nuclear waste, and environmental activism surrounding the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

Atomic Cosmologies by Amy Myersbetter than most by Rachel Cox at Talley Dunn Gallery — June 7, 4-6 p.m. 5020 Tracy St. Dallas, TX 75205.

Talley Dunn opens a couple of shows this weekend, including one by Rachel Cox, who had a series of photographs in a group show at the gallery last summer. If the image on the show’s postcard is an indication of the series she will exhibit here, Cox’s anthropological sensibilities are employed in an investigation of various subcultures – from animal competitions to baking contests – resulting in photos that accentuate and aestheticize overlooked objects and moments while evoking a sense of cultural and temporal distance.

Going West by Allison V. SmithMagee and Color by James MageeEl Otro Lado by Camp BosworthWest Texas Triangle Series by Ken Little at the Old Jail Art Center — June 7 201 S. 2nd St. Albany, TX 76430.

A quartet of exhibitions at the Old Jail Art Center — paired with a relatively sleepy art weekend in Dallas — makes the idea of hiking out to Albany sound appealing. Allison V. Smith’s landscape photographs and James Magee’s throw-back sculptures play well off of Camp Bosworth’s kitchy gilded gold weapons and Ken Little’s playful, animal bronzes.

WRECKED presented by Art Conspiracy at Life in Deep Ellum — June 7, Doors at 6 p.m. Show from 7-11 p.m. 2803 Taylor St. Dallas, TX 75226.

Art Con promised they would get more active, kicking-off a live music series a few weeks ago. This, however, is the annual fundraiser auction and concert that raises money for Art Con’s main auction event, which will take place later in the year. The bands include Dark Rooms, French 75 with DJ Mouth Mold, and Ronnie Heart, and the art for auction is all created from everyday objects.
