5 Art Openings (That Aren’t the Art Fair) That You Can’t Miss This Weekend

In addition to the fair and openings at big institutions, here are some great below-the-radar events taking advantage of out-of-town influx.

It’s Dallas Art Fair week. The Art Fair kicks-off tomorrow, and there are shows at the Dallas Contemporary, a new opening at the Power Station, and Bettina Pousttchi‘s Sightings exhibit at the Nasher Sculpture Center. Then there are all sorts of spin-off events, pop-ups, and other openings and exhibitions. It’s basically one of the best weeks to look at art in Dallas.

Here are five non-art fair openings that you have to catch this weekend, followed by the full art event listings.

East Bound and Down by Fredrik Vaerslev at The Power Station April 9, 6-8 p.m. 3816 Commerce St. Dallas, TX 75226.

From what I understand, Vaerslev is installing a straight painting show at The Power Station, an art space that typically invites artists to take advantage of the raw, industrial space.

Jose Lerma and Josh Smith, presented by DB14 at Oliver Francis Gallery — April 11, 8-10 p.m. 209 S Peak St, Dallas, TX 75226.

DB14 continues to single-handedly raise the bar on what we expect from Dallas art on a weekly basis. When all is said and done, we all owe Michael Mazurak and Jesse Morgan Barnett a year’s supply of beverages when it’s over.

DB14 at 500 Singleton Blvd. April 12, 4-8 p.m. 500 Singleton Blvd. Dallas, TX 75212.

And speaking of DB14, this large warehouse show functions as kind-off grand finale, and it features a mighty list of artists: Alterazioni Video, Conrad Atkinson, Nino Baumgartner, Bradly Brown, Jeff Gibbons, Matthew Girson, Geraldine Gliubislavich, Hannah Hudson, Shaun Leonardo, Darryl Lauster, Karin Lehmann, Lou Mallozzi, Kristin Mariani, Francisco Moreno, Margaret Meehan, Miklos Onucsan, Lana Paninchul, Bonny Poon, Ryder Richards, Vincent Ramos, Björn Ross, Michelle Rawlings, Michael Schmacke, Lucia Simek, Penelope Umbrico, and Michael Wynne

The STUFF of Legends at Gray Matters — April 12, 5-8 p.m. 113 N. Haskell Ave., Dallas, TX 75226.

Artist Margaret Meehan curates a show featuring an intriguing mix of artists whose work deals with myth, gender, fame, pop culture, and politics.

Eli Ping at AND NOW — April 12, 7-10 p.m. 1415 Beaumont St. Dallas, TX 75215.

As I wrote in February James Cope’s AND NOW is a version of the kind of gallery we don’t typically see open (and survive) in Dallas. After a quiet first show, this opening, coinciding with an Art Fair after party at nearby Lee Harvey’s, is his first real bow.
