Michael E. Smith at The Power Station — February 15, 4-7 p.m. 3816 Commerce St., Dallas, TX 75226.

While not every artist who has exhibited at The Power Station has successfully adapted to the raw, reclaimed industrial building, the space seems like an ideal venue for the work of Michael E. Smith. Smith, originally from Detroit but now living New Hampshire (by way of Yale), employs a variety of detritus materials  — clear plastic, feathers, foam, lawn chairs, undershirts, toasters – to suggestive, poetic ends, often incorporating the incongruities of a given space into visual and visceral aspects of a kind of minimalist stagecraft. The result is an occupation or infection of seemingly embodied – or incarnate — objects.

Artist Talk, Thomas Lawson at Richland College Galleries — February 13, 10-11:30 a.m. 12800 Abrams Rd., Dallas, TX 75243.

The still-impressing DB14 programming continues this week with artist Thomas Lawson speaking at Richland College. A retrospective of the artist’s work is currently up at Goss-Michael Foundation as organized by DB14.

EXPO 2014 at 500x — February 15, 5-8 p.m. 500 Exposition Ave., Dallas, TX 75226.

The annual juried show is often an entry point for new names in the local scene. This year’s juror: the Dallas Museum of Art’s Gabriel Ritter.

Tuba Öztekin Köymen at WoCA Projeccts — February 15, 6-8 p.m. 2902 Race St. Ste. 100, Fort Worth, TX 76111.

The Turkish-born, North Texas-dwelling artist enjoys a mid-career retrospective, curated by former Amon Carter photography curator Katherine Siegwarth. Köymen’s primary medium is photography, particularly pin-hole camera images taken of Turkey which register in their process and imperfection a tangible intermingling of time and place. She has also incorporated videos, text, and sound into installations that explore language, translation, and temporality.

a little bit exactly like by Lily Hanson at RE Gallery — February 15, 7-9 p.m. 1717 Gould St., Dallas, TX 75215.

Lily Hanson, who used to exhibit at Paul Slocum’s late And/Or Gallery, presents paintings derived from images of children’s dioramas and sculptures made of already-used materials that were either given to or found by the artist. Uniting her work in the two mediums is a shared interest in abstraction, narrative, and whimsy, as well as the opportunity the artistic process allows for responding to the source materials.
