Artist Sam Schonzeit says he took the title of this show, which includes iPhone photos of natural settings, manipulated, obstructed, or obscured, from a line in Lars von Trier’s film Antichrist. The result is an attempt to force a similar tension between the individual, in this case the artist, and his attempts to manipulate, impose, enforce, and dominate his surroundings. Curious biographical detail: Schonzeit, who now lives in Marfa, grew up in Soho across the street from Donald Judd.
Justin Quinn, Michael Mazurek, and Bret Stewart at Conduit Gallery – January 11, 6-8 p.m. 1626 Hi Line Dr. #C, Dallas, Texas 75207.
The work of Michael Mazurek, who has shown as recently as last December at Oliver Francis Gallery, may prove a suitable complement to Minnesota-based artist Justin Quinn. In their own way, both artists approach to ideas about narrative, fixation, erasure, and the relation between intrinsic and exterior meanings in the work of art. The show is rounded out by the more lighthearted Bret Stewart in the project room whose work incorporates found objects and old toys in fashioned satires.
Wanderings, by Anna Bogatin at Holly Johnson Gallery — January 11, 6-8 p.m. 1411 Dragon Street in Dallas, Texas 75207.
This is the Russian born, Pennsylvania-dwelling artist Anna Bogatin’s first solo show at Holly Johnson, though you may remember her work from the gallery’s On Drawing group show last summer. There’s a meditative quality to the work, similar to Agnes Martin, in which a meticulously rendered, minimalist aesthetic suggests a transcendental, almost spiritual resonance.
Crass: reflections on the necessities of commodification by Travis LaMothe at The Reading Room — January 11, 6-9 p.m. 3715 Parry Ave., Dallas, TX 75226.
One of my art regrets of 2013 was missing Travis LaMothe’s exhibition at That That. In keeping with The Reading Room’s textual interest, the artist, who recently received his M.F.A. from Southern Methodist University, will exhibit work here that explores the interaction between words, objects, and architecture.

The latest exhibition at the Dallas Contemporary looks to be another of the museum’s hot, wet messes. Among the five new shows, I’m most curious to see Les Miserables, a self-described “post conceptual” exhibition organized by Dallas Contemporary director Peter Doroshenko.
