Concerts Not to Miss Over the Holiday Break

FrontRow won't be posting daily show alerts through NYE, but don't miss Peanut Butter Wolf, Lights All Night, and a Neon Indian DJ set.

I’m going to keep this brief since we’re not really going to be posting normal show advisories between now and New Year’s Eve. We will have an assortment of retrospective content, between now and then,  however, so look out for that. The following is a list of shows you should be aware of over the break, starting with this weekend, and continuing into next:

Friday, Dec. 20:

Bill Bridges/ATOP/Montazuma/Blackweed/Peasant/Ulnae (Moncayo House): An evening of experimental art in a semi-exclusive setting. Ulnae doesn’t play very often so try to catch them.

The Cush/Dove Hunter/The Angelus/Missing Sibling (Club Dada): This festive event is thrown by the booking entity known plainly as the Artist Collective, and this includes an assortment of some of their more well-known bands. Excluding Missing Sibling, fittingly.

Lil Texas/Track Meet (The Travis): Did I ever have fun at the last Track Meet event at the Travis last week. After the semigloss. after-party, things got a little out-of-hand. I hate when people brag about how trashed they got, so I won’t. Then there was some warehouse after-party after the bars let out, which took place in the Medical District following that. No wonder I got the flu, or the “party flu” as it is sometimes known. Lil Texas is now on the West Coast, I believe. Let’s do this again.

Saturday, Dec. 21:

“A Spune Christmas” (Texas Theatre): We have the details on our “Things to Do” post for this weekend.

Jay Z (American Airlines Center): We have a commerce-themed preview of this event from our print edition, if you go here.

Following the concert, Jay Z’s man behind the faders will be making an appearance over at the Travis. He’ll be joined by Sober.

“Vinyl Fantasy” (The Crown and Harp): Featuring two of my favorite selectors from around town, emptycylinder, and Clumsy and Shy. This is a good night to get a format-free music history lesson. Considering some of the inane arguments I’ve had on Twitter lately, some people could use a refresher course.

Sunday, December 22:

Neon Indian (DJ Set)/Yeahdef (Hailey’s Club): The holidays are all about reunions and what better way to do it than to refamiliarize yourself with one of the region’s most well-known exports. Hear some expertly selected tracks chosen by people who are always ahead of the curve, and remember, the key to escaping is to not limit oneself to local music. For more future-based nostalgia somewhat connected to Neon Indian, go here.

Thursday, December 26th:

Perfect P*ssy/Bukkake Moms/Bludded Head/Orgullo Primitivo (Three Links): This is a heck of an avant/noise rock/experimental hardcore show on one of the toughest days of the year to throw an event, but I bet this gang wouldn’t want it any other way. Recommended if you like antisocial, outwardly aggravational music.

“Fresh Beats” (Crown and Harp): Slim Gravy will be hosting this battle which will be split between hip hop and EDM in this edition.

“Vibe” (Beauty Bar): Resident Colly T will have Track Meet as guests this week, in case you missed them at the Travis the weekend prior.

Friday, December 27:

Peanut Butter Wolf/JT Donaldson/DJ A1/Tape Mastah Steph (The Crown and Harp): There may not be another show I’m more personally excited about than this, for the entire duration of Winter Break. Peanut Butter Wolf’s set was the last official show I attended at the original location of Emo’s in late 2010, when he was opening for Anika, who records for his predominantly hip hip label, Stones Throw. I wasn’t prepared for PB Wolf’s set, which involved video clips that he manipulated with turn tables. He references everything from Krautrock to funk to Jesus and Mary Chain to Gang Starr, and seamlessly at that. It was one of the fascinating sets I’ve ever seen. Do not miss it.

Shinyribs/Parker Milsap/Jeff Whittington (The Kessler): You may be familiar enough with the Gourds to know that “Shinyribs” Russell fronts the undefinable, rootsy, jam act. In that case you’ll already be there, but show up early enough to catch Jeff Whittington’s meticulously worded lyrical content. Was there any doubt it would be any other way?

“Lights All Night” (Dallas Convention Center): The first of this two-night spectacle features performances by Deadmau5, Icona Pop, Fedde Le Grand, Carnage, Krewella, Grizmatik, Zomboy, The Knocks, Fergie, Le Castle Vania, HeRobust, and David Starfire. And I do mean Spectacle with a capital “S.” I went to the first round of LAN a couple of years ago, when Girl Talk and the aforementioned Neon Indian played, and I felt like I was on a different continent. A much warmer continent, possibly on the coast. That’s how everyone was dressed anyhow. And it was freezing. Just have your parents drop you off, kids. Or Vern, tell your folks you’re sleeping over Teddy’s.

 Sunday, December 28:

“Lights All Night” (Dallas Convention Center): Round two features Kaskade, Nicky Romero, R3hab, Above & Beyond, Major Lazer, A-Trak, BL3ND, Kill Paris, Matisse & Sadko, WISHFM, Paper Diamond, Dirtyphonics, and finally, Nom De Strip. Head here for more info.
