“Fresh Cuts” (Crown and Harp): If you’re one of those people who has to jump ahead to read the last page of every novel, or finish an entire bag of pink-frosted animal cookies in one sitting, then tonight’s DJ competition at Crown and Harp is for you. The event literature states that this will include “all of [the] future guests” tentatively scheduled to appear at the turntablist showcase, and that’s a heck of a list, with many of Dallas’ most well-known, vinyl-focused, artists:

Eat Avery’s Bones/Violent Squid/Bitch Teeth/Cerulean Giallo (Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios): Allow me to be a little nostalgic for once, usually something I try hard to avoid. My first ever writing assignment for a Dallas-based website was to review an Eat Avery’s Bones show in April of 2006. That piece was promptly rejected, which was my take on a set at the Double Wide. The bill also featured former Dallas band, The Strange Boys; former Denton act, Cartwright; and finally, Attractive and Popular, a Myspace-era dance-punk band from Arkansas. I went through a drafts folder from three email addresses ago, and finally found this rejected post. Here are a couple of excerpts:
I overheard that their lead singer/drummer had arrived
to the show straight from prom with his date watching
in the audience.
It was that long ago. As in, high school prom long ago.
The review concludes thusly:
…the band ended their set with a song about crystal
meth and inviting everyone to dance on stage. If the
show had stopped there, I’d have been satisfied.
The show didn’t stop there, and I was still satisfied. I know the result will be the same at the show this evening, if their performance during Spring 2013’s festival season was any indication.
After looking up the preview my old editor wrote, I realized that a headliner for another show this weekend, Spank Rock, also performed that evening, at Hailey’s of all places. That night he had DJ Nature as an opening act, and I’m going to stop there before this makes me feel any older.
“The Turn Up” (Beauty Bar): Resident DJ, Ynfynyt Scroll, will have his entire Track Meet crew with him tonight, and there will also be black lights involved. Rumor has it that Beauty Bar has significantly upgraded its sound system, according to this tweet from regular Beauty Bar DJ, Blake Ward:

So, hopefully that improvement will already be a factor when doors open.
Ovvl/Kallohonka/Mountain of Smoke/Death Penalty (Taqueria Pedritos): A donation of three to five dollars is recommended to lighten the burden of the touring acts at this increasingly active DIY venue/restaurant.
DJ Sober/DJ Nemeses (Trinity Groves): Before you allow too much prep time, note that this is an early event, running from 8-11 p.m. The energy drink sponsored showdown pitches two DJs representing different entities against one another, and the two competitors are Greenville Avenue street culture-hub, Rec Shop, and Caviar Club, a collective “celebrating their art, friendship, city and looking sharp while doing it.” That doesn’t sound unlike a lot of folks in town, and this is all to decide who will represent the city as part of Red Bull’s upcoming flugtag event. Said event involves building things and going outside, so I don’t really know much about it. I’ll have more information as it becomes available, and for a related news item, go here.
