D Magazine's weekly guide to the goings-on in the Dallas-Fort Worth area August 7

Sarah Eveans, Events Editor

Oh hello there! Welcome to August. Traditionally, this has been our least favorite month. We’re glad you asked why. We think it’s because when we were younger we hated going back to school, and we would spend the entire month thinking about how to avoid being called “The Lion” all year long due to our excessively curly and frizzy hair (and yes, we still hate lions). But so far this August, things are looking much brighter! First of all, it’s Restaurant Week, which excites us because we love to eat a lot. Secondly, the Olympics are starting, and we love to watch gymnastics. Lastly, we’ve recently started using Frizz-Ease, and it works wonders. Too bad it took us (cough, cough) years to figure out this magic trick. Anyway, let’s cheer for team USA and for smoothing products, too. Until next week...

Featured Event

KRLD Restaurant Week Preview Weekend - Through Aug. 17

Need an excuse to treat yourself? We frequently use reasons such as: It’s raining; It’s sunny; We’ve had a good day; We’ve had a bad day. Pick one and celebrate during KRLD Restaurant Week. For nine days (including this year’s Preview Weekend), you’ll have the opportunity to sample some of the area’s best cuisine, with special three-course prix fixe dinner combinations at participating restaurants. And because the proceeds of the event go to charities such as the North Texas Food Bank, your dinner helps feed others, which makes us feel better about stuffing our faces.

Happenings: 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Watching Party

We cannot believe it’s already time for the Olympics again. Four years flies by, doesn’t it? Last Olympics, we were young! We were carefree! Now we’re just jaded and old.

Saturday

Happenings: Joel McHale

You’re hip. You’re happening. Obviously, you love television, which means you love The Soup, E!’s weekly show that rips on all TV programs. Come see the host of the show, Joel McHale, try his hand at stand-up this weekend at the Majestic.

Sunday

8/10

Theater and Dance: A Streetcar Named Desire - Through Aug 13

Known for the most famous balcony scene next to Romeo and Juliet, this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic by Tennessee Williams closes out the sixth season of shows at the Contemporary Theatre of Dallas. We had to restrain ourselves from standing on our desk and yelling “Stella!” when we heard the news.

Tuesday

8/12

Happenings: Abi Ferrin Trunk Show at The Heritage at the Stoneleigh

Yes, we’ve seen you sipping cocktails on the patio at the newly renovated Stoneleigh bar. (And, we’ve also seen you stumbling through Bolla a few hours later screaming for “some of that risotto.” But hey, who are we to judge.) This is another good excuse to stop by the hotel.
