D Magazine's weekly guide to the goings-on in the Dallas-Fort Worth area May 15
Forwward to a friend

Sarah Eveans, Events Editor

Last weekend I went up to Oklahoma City for a wedding shower. (In Oklahoma, they call it, “the city.” Okay, no they don’t.) Although I had a fantastic time with the bride and her enormous group of friends and family—especially at a bar called The Sip, where I tried in vain to remain standing—I realized how lucky we are to have all these great events to attend every week. In other cities, folks like you and me (but not as cute, obvs) would have to struggle to find just one gallery opening or decent live music act to go see. But here in Dallas, we’ve got running/drinking events, amazing musical acts, Sundays amongst the sculptures (not to mention David Beckham), and much more, all in just a mere seven days. Readers, we must remember how lucky we are. Now, back to our regularly scheduled hostility and jaded perspective.

Featured Event

Radiohead - May 18

If you didn’t download In Rainbows for free (or virtually free; we paid $5), before it was in stores, than you are officially turning into your parents. While there’s nothing wrong with that—mom and dad did have fun once a month, during “Flamingo Fridays” at the neighbor’s house—you might want to get this CD right now. You’ll be as addicted as we are in no time to “Bodysnatchers,” “Weird Fishes,” and “Jigsaw Falling Into Place” as we are. (Our editor is particularly keen on “Nude.”) We know we’re supposed to love their older stuff just as much, but at this point we’re happy where we are. 7:30 pm. Superpages.com Center (formerly Smirnoff Music Center), 1818 First Ave. 214-421-1111. ticketmaster.com

Happenings: Katy Trail 5K

We can’t believe it’s that time of year again. Last year, we went crazy in training for two days before the Katy Trail 5K, and we were still unable to make it the whole way before a cramp forced us to run into the woods and pray to God that Cute Boy didn’t see our stealthy exit. By the time we made it to the finish line, he was lost in the crowd, but this year, we won’t lose him! We are determined!

Friday

5/16

Festivals: Wildflower Music and Arts Festival Through May 18

All you need to know about this festival is: Bret Michaels is going to be there. And he might be auditioning new Rock of Love contestants, if you know what we mean. No, this festival isn’t just about Bret, it’s an annual event that draws thousands of people for music, art, and more music, and more art.

Sunday

5/18

Happenings: Symphonic Sundays at the Nasher

Musicians from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Nasher Sculpture Center, which is just the kind of art world synergy we like to see happening downtown.

Sunday

5/18

Sports: FC Dallas vs. LA Galaxy

Remember in high school how all the cutest boys played soccer? Come find out if this is still true by scoping out the players on our city’s team, FC Dallas.

Wednesday

5/21

Music: The Police with special guest Elvis Costello & The Imposters

There’s a good chance we’ll end up getting into a fist fight with a nice ticket broker on the side of the street for this show. But nothing will stand between us and Sting. Nothing.
