So this is the New Year. If you’re like us, you’re welcoming in 2008 five pounds heavier, cloudy-headed, and working on a weeklong hangover. We’re ready to relax, attempt to detox, and treat ourselves right. We think taking in an art exhibition, learning a few new (light) recipes, and cheering on our favorite teams sound a lot healthier than what we’ve been doing in the past couple of weeks. Now, if someone could just finish our thank you notes… |

Target First Saturdays at the Nasher - 1/5
Hide the Nintendo Wii, load the kids into the car, and head to the Nasher Sculpture Center for some fun that happens to be educational. Just don’t tell those precious children. This family event includes free admission to the Nasher from 10am-2pm, tours, scavenger hunts, and more. This month’s theme is Innovation, something we could all use a bit more of this time of year. 10am-2pm. The Nasher Sculpture Center, 2001 Flora St. 214-242-5100. www.nashersculpturecenter.org. |

Music: Boneafit for Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch Featuring Kinky Friedman and Steven Fromholz
In what they are hailing as the “Legends and Puppies Tour of 2008,” former candidate for governor Friedman and singer/songwriter Fromholz will perform to raise money for the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch in Medina, Texas. We predict many songs about Texas, many men in cowboy hats, a little talk about politics, and a pretty darn good time. 8pm. Poor David’s Pub, 1313 South Lamar. 214-565-1295. www.frontgatetickets.com. |

Food:Cooking Light at the Viking Cooking School
When we cook at home, our motto usually is, the more butter, the better. That Paula Deen cookbook mom gave us for Christmas doesn’t help much, either. Luckily, the people at the Viking Cooking School want to help us avoid morbid obesity with their Cooking Light class. Students prepare healthy recipes like herb-crusted halibut and wild rice and orange salad, and then get the recipes—complete with nutritional info—to take home with them. 6:30pm. The Milestone Culinary Arts Center, 4531 McKinney Ave. 214-526-3942. www.milestoneculinary.com. |

Sports: Mavericks vs. Miami Heat
Attending Mavericks games is a guaranteed good time for everyone, and the people watching just can’t be beat. We’re also certain that a night spent staring at the well-sculpted bodies of the Mavericks dancers will have an effect on our workout schedule. 8:30pm. The American Airlines Center, 2500 Victory Ave. 214-467-8277. www.dallasmavericks.com. |

Sports: InterLiga
Sports fans, here is something completely different: For the fifth year in a row, DFW is home to InterLiga, a soccer (futbol) tournament for Mexican teams to determine berths for the Cope Libertadores 2008 championship in South America. We’re betting the folks who turn out to see powerhouse teams such as América and Toluca play are going to be pretty fired up, which sounds like a surefire way to forget all about those holiday blues. Beer will also help. 4pm. Pizza Hut Park, 6000 Main St., Frisco. 972-731-6524. www.pizzahutpark.com. |

Museums and Galleries: Declaring Space at the Modern
This is the last day you can see this amazing exhibition, so get your car pointed in the direction of Cowtown. Compare that faux Rothko that’s hanging on your wall to the real thing you’ll find here, as well as works by Lucio Fontana, Barnett Newman, and Yves Klein. These four artists were influential in the evolution of the use of space and color in post-World War II abstract painting and modern art. 11am-5pm. The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St., Fort Worth. 817-738-9215. www.themodern.org. |
