D Magazine's weekly guide to the goings-on in the Dallas-Fort Worth area January 31
Forwward to a friend

January is almost over! February is here! Oh, wait. This is that love month. Questions abound. “What should I wear to dinner?” asks your work friend. “What do red roses mean again?” asks your noncommittal brother. And of course, “If he takes me to The Grape, do I have to sleep with him?” asks everyone. Well, bear with it. If the questions don’t get you, then the endless trailers for “Atonement” will. On the bright side, we’ve still got two weeks or so to find a new BF, while you’re stuck with that dude from college. Luckily, we can look forward to drinking 12 beers and eating refried bean dip during the SuperBowl, and drinking 12 hurricanes and “winning” piles of beads during Fat Tuesday. February. Bring. It.

Featured Event

MystiQal at Victory Park, Feb. 2

Normally we would be very skeptical about this event, based purely on the spelling of the word “MystiQal.” (What is “q” without “u?” Our mouth frowns.) But since it’s nearly Fat Tuesday, we’re going to get in the Mardi Gras spirit. Let’s start by yelling all those French words that mean, “Let’s get drunk and make bad decisions!”

Friday

2/1

Music: Super Furry Animals

I asked D Magazine’s resident music critic Zac Crain about Super Furry Animals, and he said they’re awesome, so really, that should be enough for you. He also said that they dressed up as yetis at the end of the show the last time he saw them. I had to ask what those were. Now, Zac thinks I’m pretty stupid.

Saturday

2/2

Film: The Gates Documentary Screening

When we lived in New York, we wandered through Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s art installation, The Gates, in Central Park. We thought it was fabulous, but our friend just thought all that gold fabric made his hangover worse.

Sunday

2/3

Sports: The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo

While many of you will be busy today exercising your “beer muscle” and gorging on Doritos, another option is heading out to the last day of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.

Tuesday

2/5

Music: Fat Tuesday Featuring the Go-Go’s

We know you have rocked it on the dance floor to “We Got the Beat” at least 100 times. So, it might have been a while ago, and you might have been hipper and fitter. But if Scott Baio had that same attitude, we probably wouldn’t be watching so much Scott Baio is 46 and Pregnant, now would we?

Theatre: Farewell My Concubine Through Feb 6

We’re guessing you’ve never seen an opera performed entirely in Mandarin. Heck, if you’re like us, the most culture you’ve gotten lately is from reading old issues of Star Magazine at the dentist’s office. If that’s the case, we recommend heading to the Eisemann Center to see this production from the China National Opera.
