What is a facelift?
A facelift is a cosmetic procedure to improve the lower portion of hte face including the jowls and the neck. There is no such thing as a "complete" or "total" facelift. Facelift surgergy can include anything from a mini-facelift, which can be performed with local anesthesia in an office setting, to a much more extensive procedure requiring general anesthesia and taking three to five hours.
Is there a nonsurgical facelift?
Nonsurgical facelifts are not really facelifts. These procedures use dermal fillers, like Juvederm, Restylane, and others, to add back volume lost over time and camoflauge the jowl area. The effects are temporary, but the procedures can be performed in the office with minimal to no recovery.
What are the risks of a facelift?
Any surgical procedure has risks. Some of the risks will depend on your particular medical conditions. You can expect some bruising and swelling after surgery which may last for several weeks. Numbness occurs in the cheeks, neck, and ears. Rare risks include damage to the nerve providing motion to the face and abnormal scarring. Consultation with a facial plastic surgeon will help determine your particular risks.

How long do the results of a facelift last?
It is impossible to determine how long any cosmetic procedure will last. Just as it is impossible to tell you what you will look like in 10 years without a procedure, it is impossible to tell you what you will look like in 10 years after having a procedure. Aging factors including genetics, smoking, sun exposure, skin type, and nutrition all play into how long the positive results of a procedure will last.
