What are implant-supported dentures?

Unlike conventional dentures that simply rest on the gum, implant-supported dentures are actually fixed to the implant to provide better support, aesthetics, and function. Essentially, the denture snaps into place over framework that is anchored to the dental implants.

What are the advantages of implant-supported dentures?

This is an excellent option for patients who have lost a tooth or several teeth due to anything from lack of dental care over a prolonged period of time to accidents or injuries. The implants act as an anchor, ensuring you’ll have proper chewing function for the rest of your life. Also, because the dentures are anchored into the bone, you don’t have to worry about the dentures falling out when eating or talking. My patients find they have overall confidence due to improved aesthetics and well as better function. These dentures cost far less than other cosmetic options, such as veneers, and you get same or better results in that they are aesthetically pleasing, hidden, and easy to maintain. Implant-supported dentures are typically more comfortable than conventional denture because they are secure and function more like your natural teeth.

Is it possible to have non-removable implant-supported dentures?

If you are an appropriate candidate, you can ask your dentist to use non-removable dentures. This means you can’t take them in and out to maintain or clean them. Only the dentist can remove them. Most of my patients find they like the ability to remove and clean them on their own. And, you can sleep in removable implant-supported dentures.

Will it be obvious to others that I have dentures?

I craft the dentures carefully to blend with each patient’s teeth, skin tone, eye and hair color, and overall facial shape. It’s a customized process, and the patient is involved in every aspect of the design and approves the dentures before we place them. The result is a very natural-looking appearance. In fact, many patients tell me their spouse doesn’t even know they have dentures.

Why is it important that I replace my missing teeth with implants or implant-supported dentures?

Missing teeth can cause your jawbone to deteriorate, or shrink, creating an aged, time-worn appearance, which can be costly and time-consuming to restore. Whether you have lost one tooth or several teeth, implant-supported dentures can bring your mouth and smile back to a healthy function and appearance. I tell my patients that two implants are good, three are better, and four are best for maximum results. In most cases, these dentures are placed on the lower jaw because it moves more, but they can be placed on the upper jaw if necessary.
