The Scene: January 2009
Grand Opening of The Joule Hotel, 2008 DIFFA Dining by Design Gala, Cause For Drinks, and Curator’s Choice
The Crown Joule
There were gospel singers in the valet line, mermaids in the pool, burlesque in the bar, and professional football players in the ballroom. Suffice to say, partygoers at the Grand Opening of The Joule Hotel downtown got a dose of fantasy along with their cocktails at this over-the-top soiree. Even those who tend to get a bit jaded about events (yours truly) couldn’t help but gape at the colorful crowd. And the food! Thanks to chef Charlie Palmer, we dined on bone marrow and beef tenderloin, stone crab, and palm-sized shrimp. We were sad to miss the celebs (Martin Scorsese, Sarah Ferguson, the Jonas Brothers), but downstairs at the newly opened PM, we spotted designer Douglas Little, Todd Fiscus, Rob Dailey, Sean Avery, Mike Modano, Willa Ford, Brendan Higgins, Faisal Halum, Brian Bolke, Doss Alexander, Amy Mueller, Josh Madans, and many more. Overheard at the pool: “Shall we get a room? It can be our secret.”
It’s not every day one gets to have dinner at a table designed by Marc Blackwell or Trading Spaces’ Doug Wilson. But at the 2008 DIFFA Dining by Design Gala, that’s exactly what guests got to do. We were fans of the sleek Stoli vodka table, with Hotel ZaZa a close second. Others enjoying the sights included chair Donna Fishel, Neale Jones, and Patricia Deason.
Cause for Cheers
When we were in our 20s, there wasn’t much on our minds besides parties and boys. Well, honestly, not much has changed since we hit 30. Even still, it’s comforting to know groups like Cause for Drinks exist. Young philanthropist Hunter Heres assembled the group, and the first local meeting was held at hot spot Lotus. Revelers Sarah Oswald and Angela Bowen came out to drink, and $1 of every libation went to the Patrón Music in Motion tour.
The Top Choice
We can imagine the amount of Tut talk that went on at the Junior Associates Circle’s annual Curator’s Choice recruitment party, held, natch, at the Dallas Museum of Art. There might even have been a few “Walk Like an Egyptian” jokes cracked by those witty JAs. But all that humor helped the group sign up more than 50 new members in one evening, so, obviously, they can talk a good game. Plus, incoming chairs Capera Ryan and Rachel and Chris Trowbridge received the torch from outgoing chairpersons Amy and Corey Prestidge.
