Why Are There No Basements In Texas?

12/19/2008 12:00:00 PM

Please, it’s a “subterranean level”!

The stories: Because Texas has shifting soils, and because basements would fill with water, snakes, slimy things, home builders never build homes with them in Texas. While pier-ed slabs or pier-and-beam construction are the most common foundation methods, cost may have more to do with it than dirt. When land is cheap, builders tend to spread out square footage. Basements require excavation and more concrete. But as land inside The Loop becomes more precious in Dallas, we are seeing more basements, aka “subterraneans.”
