Portraits of the Artist
03.19WHERE HE’S FROM: Dallas. WHERE HE STUDIED: BA from the University of Texas and an MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University School of Art. ALL IN THE FAMILY: “My uncle is an artist. My grandmother was the first woman accepted into the Maryland Institute College of Art. My dad was a part-time photographer, and he was always in the dark room.” BUILDING BLOCKS: “All of my work is based on photography—digital pictures of buildings that are manipulated. It’s the model.” From there, Fitzpatrick uses acrylic paint on canvas and tape for a masking technique to create hard-edged, modernist pieces. His large works can take close to a month to complete. ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST: “I have young people who are collectors. Others are really focused on architecture.” Fitzpatrick also has a show coming up in Seoul, South Korea, in November. WHERE TO BUY HIS WORK: Holly Johnson Gallery. hollyjohnsongallery.com.photography by James BlandEmail
